Abstract

We humans know we are not physically fit unless we do extra, voluntary exercise. Yet we have never asked whether the same is true for animals. If it is, then given that energy will be spent keeping fit this raises important issues about new energetic trade-offs, which have never been considered. Journal of Animal Ecology
