Abstract

This paper proposes a three dimensional (3D) digital textbook (DT) suitable for future educational purposes, using the extensible 3D (X3D) standard. The new DT is intended to enhance overall learning effectiveness by facilitating student motivation and engagement with more visually sophisticated 3D learning resources. It is also intended to overcome the limitations of 2D DTs regarding multimedia features by taking full advantage of 3D graphics. As a prototype, a 3D DT was developed for the subject of general computing used in high schools in South Korea. A user satisfaction survey was conducted after one semester and the responses were generally positive, especially in regard to the 3D learning resources. © 2013 Springer Science+Business Media.
