Vehicular Ad-hoc Network (VANET) is a special ad-hoc network for communicating between vehicles or vehicle and Roadside Unit (RSU). Vehicles need to exchange necessary messages in realtime to achieve safety driving. The security and privacy issues during such communication become critical. Ring signature is usually used to achieve authentication due to its anonymity and unforgeability. Consequently, how to determine the ring members during vehicle’s registration and mobility becomes a critical problem. In this paper, a pseudonym ring building scheme for anonymous authentication in VANETs is proposed, which can guarantee the secure communication goal between vehicles without revealing the true identity. Brief analysis shows that the proposed scheme satisfies the security features required in VANETs.
