Massive multiplayer online role playing games (MMORPGs) possess an untapped potential in game-based learning. They provide platforms which have been proven to be engaging for educators to incorporate educational elements into game play. In order to assess the suitability of MMORPGs in specific educational settings, we introduce the video-diary method, which evaluates human-computer interaction between the students and the game. Through the video-diary method, we can better assess the suitability of each MMORPG in meeting the curriculum objectives, as well as the engagement between gamer and game. We also review five popular MMORPGs: MapleStory, World of Warcraft, Second Life, Counter-Strike and Runescape for their suitability as educational games, suggesting specific subjects which can be taught because they are particularly suited to each MMORPG's game play. © 2011 Springer-Verlag.
