Abstract

Laboratory animals play a crucial role in research discovery and technological advances, and they will continue to take part in improving the lives of people and other animals. It is incumbent upon the researcher to know his subject well in order to provide relevant information to the scientific world. In an effort to assist the biomedical researcher in gaining this knowledge, this chapter provides the following key elements: definition of types of animal models, legislative and legal requirements, criteria for choosing a model, extrapolation validity recommendations, and descriptive features for publication. © 2008 Humana Press Inc.
