Abstract

This chapter reviews modern heuristic optimization approaches for unit commitment (UC) scheduling problem in electrical power system planning, operation, and optimization by discussing recent and historical developments. The purpose of this chapter is to illustrate the potential application of the modern heuristic optimization approaches in the optimization of UC scheduling and the advantages of such methods. Relevant publications from international journals covering a broad range of modern heuristic optimization methods applied to UC problems are reviewed. Recent advances and development trends in applying the modern heuristic optimization approaches to solving UC problem are summarized in the conclusions. © 2013 Springer Science+Business Media New York.
