Abstract

One way of promoting interculturality in foreign language education is developing intercultural citizenship skills and values through teaching global issues. This chapter argues for the importance of teaching global issues for the development of intercultural citizenship values and skills through the evaluation of the content and activities of a Tunisian EFL textbook "Skills for Life". The evaluation demonstrated that the textbook included an essentialist view of culture and a limited representation of global issues and skills, thus making the textbook unsuitable for teaching intercultural citizenship skills. Textbook designers and educational policymakers in Tunisia and elsewhere in the world were invited to design more globally and interculturally oriented language teaching practices and materials.
