Some of the basic controllability properties of bilinear systems are examined and an explicit expression for the reachable set at time t for a large class of systems is obtained. This class is described by a chain condition on the Lie algebra of vector fields associated with each bilinear system. These results are used to obtain a description of the reachable set for a class of nonlinear systems which includes systems arising from the series interconnection of bilinear systems.
