Abstract

The structure of bacteriorhodopsin in purple membranes of Halobacterium halobium was studied by neutron diffraction, using bacteriorhodopsins into which different deuterated amino acids had been biosynthetically incorporated. Various models for the structure of the protein are discussed based on the data obtained by using this approach.
