The recent advancements toward reducing complexity and obtaining interoperability between the switches in the domain of networking is the separation of control plane and data plane. Software-defined network (SDN) is an evolving technology that offers such flexibility. SDN overcomes the issues and challenges faced in the traditional networks. Due to the centralized nature of SDN, network complexity is highly reduced, thereby enabling it to be a potential technology which can be incorporated into various domains. In this paper, the major focus is on the survey of various novel SDN architectural models proposed for enhancing security and quality of service (QoS) of the network. The models for various technologies including Internet of things (IoT), 5G communication, and so on are also reviewed. Also, the earlier approaches that led to the development of SDN are discussed.
