Ulrich von Alemann presents the institutionalisation and the societal as well as historical roots of the German party system. Historically, his analysis starts at the dawn of the German revolution in 1848. By informing about the parties' societal roots, he summarizes the most popular approaches, such as Lipset and Rokkan's macrosociological approach, Lepsius' milieu theory as well as more rational choice based approaches. Furthermore, he refers to the parties' functions, their strategies as well as their internal structures.
