To overcome the limitations of standard real-time kinematic (RTK) GPS systems, a multiple-reference-station network can be used to achieve larger service coverage, increase robustness, and higher positioning accuracy compared with using a single reference station. The virtual reference station (VRS) approach is an efficient method of transmitting corrections through a data link to network users for RTK positioning. The Shanghai Virtual Reference Station (VRS) Network serves as infrastructure for the "Digital Shanghai" information system, and will provide a high precision and fast positioning service. Concerning different applications, a systematic test has been performed at different locations in Shanghai to assess the achievable accuracy and reliability for VRS-RTK positioning. The results indicate that Shanghai VRS Network positioning achieved satisfactory accuracies in both the horizontal and vertical position components, with the corresponding values being within 1.5 and 3 cm respectively. The average reliability was within 3 mm. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2009.
