Abstract

Jena and Weimar as cultural center in the late 1700's. Presence of Fichte, Goethe, Schiller, Herder, Humboldt (W and A) et al. Romantic Naturphilosophie inspired by Fichte, Schelling and empirical studies of the 1790's (in which Goethe and the Humboldts also took part). By around 1800 most of the big names were gone. Rebuilding under the influence of Goethe, Voigt, Eichstädt brings in Schelver, Oken, Kieser, Zenker. Events leading to hiring of these new guys. Muddled account of Oken's political program and how he lost his job at Jena.
