Clinical research is an indispensable part of medical practice in today’s world. In this chapter physician- scientist Williams first provides background for the development of ethical codes of conduct in clinical research which are essential for understanding the reasons underlying current clinical research practices. Williams then extends the discussion of ethics in clinical research by illuminating principles to which faithful Catholic researchers especially should adhere. These principles are truth, respect for life, respect for the integrity of persons, and the principles of generosity and justice. In the appendix to the chapter, Williams shows these principles imbedded throughout the foundational documents for ethical clinical research. Further, he provides practical sets of guidelines for each of the principles articulated in the chapter. All physicians and others engaged in any degree of clinical research would find this chapter useful for their work, and may appreciate the many opportunities in the research fields for witnessing to their faith in truth and love.-Editors.
