First, presents a framework for the examination of environmental impacts considering attractions, infrastructure, visitors, and environmental characteristics, introduces terminology, and examines the nature of the environment. The chapter is primarily concerned with physical environments, and discusses impact measurement and the nature of impacts in terms of geology, soils, vegetation, air, water and wildlife, with reference to case studies in Canada. Lastly, the author considers more recent developments in these areas, and the overall significance of environmental impacts, with a conclusion stressing the importance of careful management to protect recreational resources from over-exploitation. -P.Hardiman
