Abstract

This chapter provides the basics on the physics of light-emitting diode (LED) operation: band structures, carrier transport, different recombination mech- anisms, etc. and presents the Shockley model of ideal semiconductor diodes. Device construction techniques, LED packaging styles—all affecting LED effi- ciency/efficacy are also discussed.
