The first whole-liver transplantation in the world was performed in 1963 by Dr Thomas Starzl at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center in Denver (Bhargava et al. 2011). Survival after liver transplantation has risen considerably over the last decades, due to improvements in surgical techniques, organ conservation, immunosuppressive drugs, and the detection and treatment of postoperative complications (Garcia-Criado et al. 2002).
