Many neuropsychiatry textbooks focus on the psychiatric manifestations of neurological conditions, like Parkinson's disease, and relatively neglect the converse, like conversion disorder. That this introductory book has a similar bias is almost inevitable. In the authors exposure to neuropsychiatry as a trainee both in Vancouver, Canada and London, UK, a significant proportion of cases fall into the latter category. However, the in-depth description of a patient with non-epileptic seizures and its thoughtful formulation epileptic remedied some of this deficiency. The authors also deserve kudos for including a discussion of the defense mechanisms, refreshingly from a developmental perspective as opposed to the mildly mental derogatory tone often employed.
