Abstract

Despite the long-standing provision for protection against coastal flooding in the Netherlands, more than 500 km of river dikes remain below current strength requirements. The integration of environmental impact assessment with current policies for flood protection is discussed in relation to decision-making on dike improvements in the Netherlands, with particular attention to flood protection in the Ramspol area, near the town of Zwolle. Factors taken into account included preservation of landscape and cultural values, as well as safety and socioeconomic implications. -D.W.Taylor
