Abstract

Sustainability is an inherently interdisciplinary field. Experiential learning (EL) can help students break down disciplinary barriers or integrate multiple disciplinary dynamics to address challenges and issues related to sustainability. This chapter will first briefly outline the importance and the role of EL in sustainability education. Then the chapter will describe in detail the opportunities, challenges that need to be addressed, ways to engage students, and evaluate EL in a community-engaged setting. The information outlined in the chapter demonstrates the success of the DRG-HSI Internship Program as a community-engaged EL program in sustainability. The stages and steps outline the usefulness of Internship Program and how it can be replicated in other contexts related to sustainability.
