Abstract

Presents an overview of passive and active techniques used to control a low Reynolds number boundary layer to improve performance. Uses a vorticity framework to interpret available and proposed control methods. Considers how the laminar separation bubble affects the flow field. Control techniques investigated include wall suction/injection, shaping, heat transfer through the surface, introduction of a foreign substance into the boundary layer, fixing or moving geometric modifications and turbulence manipulation. Examines comparative construction costs and operational complexity, noting advantages and disadvantages of each technique. (from author's abstract)
