Site 661 (9°26.81'N; 19°23.166'W) lies at 4012.7 m water depth on a plateau E of the Kane Gap. Site 661 is the shallower end-member of a 2-site ODP transect (Sites 660 and 661) investigating bottom-current action and deep-water stagnation, the Cenozoic history of north equatorial surface ocean circulation, and the late Neogene advection of dust recording the history of African aridity. -from Authors
