Abstract

Some plentiful renewable energy resources are available like solar, wind, biomass to generate green energy without pollution. With the growth of population, telecom companies are rapidly increasing mobile towers to extend the coverage. A GSM (Global System for Mobile communications) base station consumes 3-5 KW of electricity and releases 5.61 million ton CO2 annually. Price of traditional energy resources like petrol, diesel, coal etc. is increasing rapidly. This motivates researchers to search for non–conventional energy resources to produce energy at low cost. In this paper, a solar–wind based hybridGSM model is proposed to supply electricity for mobile towers. In addition, it provides battery backup of 48 hrs in all weather conditions. Set up cost and operational cost of hybridGSM is less as compared to GSM and WorldGSM model. It can efficiently address the challenges of installation and maintenance of mobile towers in rural areas. To validate the proposed hybridGSM model, ns - 3 simulator is extended by including solar– wind based energy scavenging and non–linear battery model. Experimental results shows effectiveness of proposed model.
