Abstract

This chapter analyses the prospects of population growth in India for the period 2015--2100 on the basis of the projections prepared by the United Nations Population Division. The chapter decomposes the projected population growth in the country during 2015 through 2100 into the projected population growth attributed to the change in fertility and mortality, to the change in the age and sex structure effects on the birth rate and the death rate and to the change in the size of the population to identify main drivers of the future population growth. The analysis suggests that the projected increase in India's population will be driven by its very large population size as the transition in fertility and mortality and the change in population age and sex structure will contribute to decrease, instead increase, the population of the country.
