Abstract

When paired with a user-friendly GUI, a haptic-enabled rotary control knob provides a convenient and easy to use interface to control vehicle instrumentation. Such a haptic knob helps to reduce distractions on the driver. As a result, driver safety and performance is increased. Means of integrating current window control systems within such a knob is examined through human factors studies. The effects of varying forces on a knob are also investigated to further increase accuracy and performance during window selection. Results show that when forces are applied to the knob, drivers are better able to maintain control of the simulated vehicle while selecting a window. © 2010 Springer-Verlag.
