Abstract

This chapter presents an analysis of an increasingly common challenge to incumbents in the global economy: the need to abandon or transform a highly successful business model in the face of the diffusion of a core technology, and the emergence of low-cost competition. It examines the disruption of the established players in inkjet printing in the face of cost competition from new entrants in the consumable components of cartridge and ink. Case studies compare the response of established companies.
