Abstract

As was introduced in Chap. 1, this book provides a survey of theories and methods that have the capability of enabling a deep integration between Biomedical Informatics and the domains of biomedical research and clinical care delivery. Such a linkage is critical to advancing a knowledge-based approach to the provision of individually tailored healthcare that is safe, high quality and maximizes patient outcomes. This vision can be referred to at a high level as being encapsulated by a Translational Informatics (TI) model. In order to provide sufficient context for the ensuing survey, in this Chapter, we will set the scene in terms of the major stakeholders and activities that can and should be impacted by a tight coupling of Biomedical Informatics and the aforementioned TI paradigm. In order to do so, we will use a fictionalized and prototypical example of a genetically linked cancer that can impact individuals, their families, and their surrounding communities. Using this example, we will then go on to illustrate the impact of TI on: (1) evidence and policy generators; (2) providers and healthcare organizations; and (3) patients and their communities. In doing so, we hope to provide readers with a concrete example of the TI paradigm in action.
