The paper is a critical discussion of management consultancy work in relationship to professionalism and politics. Four versions of consultancy work are identified and discussed – the management consultant as esoteric expert, broaker of meaning, trader in trouble and agent of anxiety. These differ regarding claims of professionalism, client relations and the politics involved. It is argued that consultancy work moves back and forth in terms of claims of professionalism, contingent upon type of consultant, specific assignment, phase and context within an assignment and client relationship.
