Abstract

Intra-abdominal fluid collections can be classified in two main categories: free intraperitoneal fluid and contained fluid collections. Free intraperitoneal fluid may be diffuse or loculated. Contained fluid collections develop a capsule or pseudo-capsule and are circumscribed. The flow chart in Fig. 104.1 shows examples of pathologies for each category.
