Experimental results and theoretical model representations of transmission and processing of optical information in the visual system are reviewed. First the optical properties of vertebrate and insect eyes and their influence on resolution, light conducting properties, detection of polarization etc. are discussed. As to the neuronal information processing, the organization of receptive fields, the spatial frequency representation, temporal transmission properties, and models based on multiple layers or continuous media are described. Also the connection between information processing and persistence performance by the visual system is mentioned.
