This summary judgment by a Dutch seacaptain of the state of affairs in Portuguese Timor, some 55 years ago, may serve as an introduction to a preliminary sketch of the economic structure of this ‘remnant of empire’ (Remnants of Empire 1960: 585) or ‘reanimated relic’ (Hanna 1966)
