Abstract

This article provides an analysis of practices in online language learning environments that emphasizes the emergence of different acceptances of distance introduced in language learning. Distance permits the development of a variety of practice and specific tutoring that enriches the language learning environments, which are characterized by the fact that the language used for interactions is both object and means of learning. Therefore, new language practice can be developed because the learners who are at a distance belong to communities of learning with a specific pedagogical genre that can be situated within CMC (Computer Mediated Communication). To conclude, distance needs to be related to the role the learning environments play within the institution, in order to develop innovating, efficient and lasting learning practice. © Cned/Lavoisier 2011.
