Abstract

Presents an obituary for Paulina Kernberg (1935-2006), acknowledged as an inspired student of children who devoted her professional life to securing their well-being and treatment. Kernberg's commitment to psychoanalysis was realized not only in her work at the Westchester Division (Cornell), but in her long service at the Columbia University Center for Psychoanalytic Training and Research, where she taught and was a training and supervising analyst. Kernberg was most proud of her recent book Personality Disorders in Children and Adolescents, coauthored by her daughter Karen Bardenstein, and Allan Weiner. She worked hard as an advocate for dynamic psychotherapy as a means of entering into a dialogue with children and approaching their inner life and fantasies through play. Hers was a large committed voice in child and adolescent psychiatry. She will be missed by many. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2012 APA, all rights reserved)
