Abstract

The Semail Ophiolite in the Sultanate of Oman, and the Bay of Islands and St. Anthony Ophiolite Complexes in western Newfoundland show a similar multistage history of ophiolite obduction. This involved both intra-oceanic detachment of the ophiolite slabs and their emplacement onto the continental margin. Structural relations within these examples clearly indicate a complex scenario of assembly which involved initial delamination between the drift and rift facies segments of the continental margin sequence followed by major break-back (out-of-sequence) thrusting. -from Authors
