Abstract

An instance of independent theory formulation may have occurred recently. Wroe Aldersons concept of the transvection and Michael Porters concept of the value system are remarkably similar. This situation presents a number of opportunities for management scholars interested in Porters work, and for marketing scholars interested in Aldersons ideas. It is likely, however, that fewstrategic management scholars are aware of Aldersons theory. This article presents a brief biographical sketch of Wroe Alderson and outlines the major aspects of his theory. It then compares Aldersons ideas on the transvection and Porters on the value system, and each authors view of competitive advantage. Next is discussed the relative influence of each authors work, and suggested are other potential areas wherein Aldersonian thought may make unique contributions to strategic management. © 2006 Springer Science+Business Media, Inc.
