Abstract

This chapter deals with the fundamentals of swarm intelligence, focusing mainly on particle swarm optimization and ant colony optimization for solving multi-objective problems in data mining and knowledge discovery in databases. Besides providing a general overview of the field, we identify some of the multiple criteria which are tightly/loosely coupled in various steps of knowledge discovery and data mining, aiming to direct the attention of researchers towards them in the near future. © 2009 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.
