Abstract

Marital conflicts often cause quarrels, tension, even physical and psychological violence, which damage marriage or husband-wife relationship, leading to the so-called nusyuz (rebellion). Nusyuz can be triggered by various factors, for examples, one party feels dissatisfied with what his/her spouse does, both parties do not fulfill their obligations, or one party has too high expectations from his/her spouse. This article aims to explain the factors that could make a wife nusyuz and how Islamic law sees it. To answer such questions, the author used a descriptive research. The data were collected by library study and analyzed qualitatively in order to draw conclusions using deductive reasoning. The result showed that a husband must be able to take care of his wife according to Islamic law and teachings, by referring to the Quran and Hadith (the Saying of the Prophet Muhammad). Taking care of a wife who is nusyuz can be done using three methods: first, advice. Second, separate beds. Third, beat (lightly). These three methods are as written in Islamic law according to the Quran and Hadith, aimed to take care of a wife who is nusyuz.
