Abstract
The peritoneal cavity has been used in the treatment of critically ill children for the past century. Reports from Blackfan and Maxcy in 1918 demonstrated the feasibility of intraperitoneal injections of saline to resuscitate dehydrated children. The origins of continuous peritoneal lavage stem from the work of Bloxsum and Powell in 1948 and Swan and Gordon in 1949. Their early techniques used large dialysate volumes and continuous gravity dependent flow through a metal peritoneal catheter. © 2011 Springer Science+Business Media, LLC.
