The aim of the present study was to investigate the relationship between burnout syndrome and turnover in nursing staff through a systematic review of the domestic and international literature. The method was to follow the steps suggested in the Cochrane research method. The search was conducted from February to April 2015 using bdenf, medline, lilacs, pepsic, and scopus databases and capes journals. Searches included only full articles directly related to the research question and that were published between January 2010 and March 2015, resulting in 14 articles, and a positive and predictive relationship was observed between burnout and turnover among nursing professionals. The consequences of burnout and turnover are experienced by the professional suffering from burnout, by the staff who remain on the job, and by the hospital organization. The relationship between burnout and turnover among nursing staff is a serious issue and needs to be treated preventively with training sessions and care directed to the entire team.
