The chemistry and structure of synthetic and biologically precipitated hydroxyapatites are reviewed. Their most important features are their large and reactive surfaces, as well as their crystal imperfection and non-stoichiometry, which combine to make for a more reactive material than the well-crystallized stoichiometric hydroxyapatite. -R.A.H.
