This paper deals with some aspects of respiration of interest to surgeons, anaesthetists, and perfusionists involved in cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB). It looks at factors affecting the saturation of haemoglobin, the significance of ventilation- perfusion mismatching and shunting, the influence of alpha and pH stat control of bypass, and some points concerning early extubation following coronary surgery. © 1994, Sage Publications.
