This paper addresses the question of domesticity in the context of the increasingly nomadic condition of the world population. The history of the idea of domesticity is traced and the particular case of the hearth is addressed in detail. The paper speculates as to how user-centric information and communication technology might simulate the social and cultural value held by the traditional hearth. © Institute for Computer Sciences, Social-Informatics and Telecommunications Engineering 2010.
