Abstract

Niedermayer gives a well-structured summary on the emergence and evolution of the German party system. He presents the modern parties' historical roots, their evolution after the WW II and after the reunification. He uses indices of polarization, fragmentation and asymmetry to allow comparison. In addition, he explains shifts and changes in these indices by presenting the political and historical context.
