A viagem de Fermi ao Brasil em 1934 e suas entrevistas e conferências

Abstract

Em 1934, o físico italiano Enrico Fermi viajou para a América do Sul e, no Brasil, fez cinco conferências, duas em São Paulo e três no Rio de Janeiro. Neste trabalho, a intenção é complementar investigações já feitas sobre esta viagem com novas informações sobre ela. Reproduzimos uma interessante entrevista de Fermi a um jornal carioca sobre suas impressões acerca do Brasil, e apresentarmos as sínteses de quatro de suas conferências, publicadas em jornais da época. Tais conteúdos, além de significativos para a história da ciência no Brasil, podem ter algum interesse para professores e estudantes no entendimento das contribuições científicas de Fermi e de sua visão sobre a ciência. A análise das visitas de cientistas de grande destaque ao Brasil, nas primeiras décadas do século XX, pode trazer elementos históricos que possibilitam um melhor entendimento acerca dos caminhos iniciais da física moderna no país e o surgimento das primeiras instituições e grupos de pesquisa organizados. Elas contribuíram para estimular pesquisadores locais, para valorizar as incipientes instituições científicas e para destacar a importância da “ciência pura”, já que foram eventos que tiveram ampla divulgação na mídia e repercussão junto ao meio acadêmico e às autoridades e instituições locais. Este trabalho pretende mostrar, ainda, que a interação de Fermi com o Brasil deixou legados importantes para a ciência brasileira.In 1934, the Italian physicist Enrico Fermi traveled to South America and, in Brazil, gave five lectures, two in São Paulo and three in Rio de Janeiro. In this work, the intention is to complement investigations already carried out on this trip, bringing new information about it. We reproduce an interesting interview by Fermi to a Rio de Janeiro newspaper about his impressions of Brazil, and we present the summaries of four of his conferences, published in newspapers of the time. Such contents, in addition to being significant for the history of science in Brazil, may be of interest to teachers and students in understanding Fermi’s scientific contributions and his vision of science. The analysis of visits by prominent scientists to Brazil, in the first decades of the 20th century, can bring historical elements that allow a better understanding of the initial paths of modern physics in the country and the emergence of the first institutions and more organized research groups. They contributed to stimulating local researchers, to valuing incipient scientific institutions and to to highlighting the importance of “pure science”, since they were events that were widely publicized in the media and had repercussions among the academic world and local authorities and institutions. This work also intends to show that Fermi’s interaction with Brazil left important legacies for Brazilian science.
