Abstract

Pediatric patients are a unique subset of trauma patients for several reasons, including their size and developmental differences. Traumatic injuries to children over the age of 1 year are the leading cause of death and disability to this population in the United States. The most common cause of death in children between 1 and 19 years of age is a motor vehicle crash. Falls are the leading cause of injury in this same population.
