Abstract

Extensor mechanism disruption is a rare but devastating complication following total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Varying levels of success have been achieved with a variety of techniques. Various modes of reconstruction with autograft, allograft, synthetic materials, and local flaps have been described. Without a satisfactory repair of the extensor mechanism, an individual will have significant deficits in ambulation and potentially quality of life. Although no single technique has shown great results, progress has been made with improvement in surgical techniques.
