The International Maritime Satellite Organization (INMARSAT) operates the world's only commercial mobile communications satellite system. The system was established to provide satellite communications to the world's shipping and offshore industries, although other uses were foreseen. This paper outlines why INMARSAT was established, how the system works and how it can be used. It also reviews some of the new services which INMARSAT could provide with the introduction of its second-generation satellite system in 1988.
