Abstract

Stryphnodendron adstringens (Mart.) is widely distributed in five Brazilian regions, popularly known as barbatimão, barba-de-timão, borãozinho-roxo, casca-da-virgindade, uabatimô, abaramotemo, casca-damocidade, faveiro e enche-cangalha. In the northern region, this species occurs mainly in the states of Acre, Amazonas, Amapá, Roraima and Pará. In folk medicine, this plant is used in the treatment of some diseases such as gonorrhea, leukorrhea, diarrhea, ulcers, vaginal bleeding, impinges, as well as it can be used as anti-inflammatory, healing, astringent, hemostatic, antiseptic and anti-hypertensive agent. Barbatimão has several compounds produced by its secondary metabolism, such as alkaloids, terpenes, flavonoids, steroids and tannins, and the pharmacological activity of this plant is mainly due to the tannin content present in species. Therefore, this review focused in brief description botany, taxonomy and geographic distribution, as well as ethnobotanical aspects, phytochemical and pharmacological of this species.
