The singular position of the Muslim Brothers, both as an illegal but tolerated organisation, and as a quasi-party, heavily determines survey relations, which are caught in an unstable equilibrium between technics of inclusion and technics of exclusion. Besides the effects of the international context, the MB's specific situation of «open clandestinity» involves a fluctuating management of secrecy and requires a continuous bargaining of the relationship. The point at stake is to build the researcher's status - rather than to merely conquer it - in the interaction, and to redefine simultaneously the object of investigation.
