Abstract

Kidney transplantation is the treatment of choice for suitable patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Successful transplantation increases survival and quality of the life in most ESRD patients in comparison to dialysis. It also can reduce total cost of medical care. But not all patients with ESRD can undergo kidney transplantation because of their unacceptable risk for complications. Due to their complex medical conditions and comorbidities, selection of ESRD population for transplantion remains a big challenge. The transplant evaluation process includes an initial assessment for transplant suitability through a comprehensive assessment of each patient’s medical, surgical, psychosocial histories and necessary further investigation. In addition, periodic re-evaluation and management of patients during the waiting period are important to ensure candidates are stable to stay on the list. Below we discuss the systematic approach for the evaluation and management of a potential renal transplant candidate.
